Mika Nanase had been an orphan since she was born. She was abandoned as a baby and left to fend for herself until she was found by a woman in a black labcoat. She was taken in and raised by her for the first 5 years of her life. The woman Mika thought of as a mother was none other than the person that would bring her the most pain.
She was just one among the several children forced to stay in a secluded facility stationed in Japan. One of many test subjects that were to surpass human limitations, to become something more than they already were. Even if it meant death.
She spent nights wide awake remembering the screams of other children, the body bags carried out somewhere to never be found. They haunted her until she was next. She screamed and kicked fighting back, but to no avail. To keep her still and quiet they gave her an anesthetic, knocking her out for several hours until she eventually woke up.
She felt bandages over her eyes and when she took them off, she could see nothing. Even though her eyes were open there was nothing; just an empty black abyss. She began to panic and rub her eyes profusely only to realize what happened. She had gone blind. However, her other senses were heightened thanks to the experiment.
Her sense of touch became hypersensitive, her sense of smell and hearing were strengthened, and she could taste every ingredient used in the food they were given. She soon learned and adapted using her senses to feel her surroundings and move without error. Over the next few years she met 3 other children close to her age. Eventually they grew close and escaped together. All of them share the same goal. Retribution for the lives lost and the children that were turned into something almost nonhuman.
Upon "collection" Shiro Sakai lost his parents. In an effort to get him back, they were killed right in front of him before he was rendered unconscious. He woke up in a facility with children ranging from ages 4 to 18. Shiro, being one of the youngest, had only turned 4 a couple of weeks prior. One by one, and day by day, the children were taken away form their bunks for testing. Most never came back.
When it was Shiros' turn, he was strapped down and injected with a red serum. At first, there was nothing. However, 2 minutes later, he began screaming in agony and his body spasmed into a seizure. He bled from his mouth and nails before passing out. Upon awakening, he felt different.
He was safely in his bunk, but he felt heavy. His muscles were denser, mass increased, and his bones were stronger than ever. They conducted experiments to test his limits. The augmentation had increased his strength and durability. Even bullets barely left a mark. Neon's experiment was a success, but there were drawbacks.
Within 6 years he broke free with 3 other experimented children. Their goal: to bring about the ruin of the Japanese branch of twisted, sadistic scientists that changed them, Gan'yaku (PILLAR).
Kana Hiyoto lost her parents when she was 2 years old. She was born abnormally small and her heart was weak. Her older brother worked three jobs to pay for her care, and as exhausted as he was, he never felt sad because Kana was his world.
Unfortunately he wasn’t able to keep it up for long. As much as he worked and begged he couldn’t make enough to support them and pay for her medicine. He was at a loss until fate knocked at his door. On that day fate was a group of people in black lab coats accompanied by armed men.
They promised that they could cure his sister free of charge and she’d be better than ever. Out of desperation and worry, her brother agreed and handed Kana over, constantly reassuring her that she’d be okay. How oblivious he was to the truth.
When Kana was brought into the facility they prepped her for experimentation and she was strapped to a bed. Kana immediately went into a panic and screamed for her brother over and over, crying and flailing until she couldn’t anymore. Her body went limp, her breathing raspy and her heart beats slowed.
She was injected with a serum and, astonishingly, her vitals became normal. Tests were run afterwards to see how healthy she was. As if by a miracle, her heart disease was cured among other enhancements to her intellect and eye sight.
Although the promise they made to her brother was fulfilled Kana, would not be returning home with her brother. She was held with others like her, but she posed a problem. With her increased intellect and enhanced eyesight (x-ray vision for short periods of time) she constantly broke out of her room only to be caught and brought back to her room over and over again. This continued for years until she finally escaped with 3 other children with the nicknames NEON, BLIND and MUTE. After building the bomb that aided their escape and sent their captors into a panic she was nicknamed FUZE.
Hiragi Tenjo was unwanted as a child. His parents were young when they had him. They hadn’t planned on being parents nor were they prepared. As he grew up he was shown no love. He was given constant looks of disgust and rejection and was dismissed. When PILLAR came to take Hiragi away, his parents handed him over willingly.
He thought anywhere would be better than being home. In some ways it was. He wasn’t alone, he was well fed and he even had a decent bed to sleep on. He was even favored by a woman in a black lab coat. She was like the mother he never had, but she soon became the person he resented the most.
She spoke softly and used sweet words as she took him into the lab. Walking down the corridor he saw children strapped down, some dead and some barely conscious. He was too trusting of the woman and followed her anyways, staying as close as possible only to be betrayed. He screamed and kicked as he was forcefully pinned to a table and strapped down. He kept screaming even as the serum was injected.
The pain was unbearable. His body began seizing and he had several hemorrhagic strokes. Blood seeped from his ears, nails, mouth and nose. Despite the blood loss and strokes, he managed to survive, barely. The aftermath however was an issue. His screaming caused permanent damage to his vocal chords rendering him mute. He also began to experience seizures as a result of the psychological trauma he endured.
Despite these side effects, the experiment was successful. Hiragi was now the fastest human on the planet. His reaction speed went from 0.25 seconds to 0.01 seconds and he was able to run at a top speed of 35.82 mph (though the duration was limited to about 2 minutes). He would vomit and end up having a seizure almost every time he pushed his limits. Fortunately, it was enough time for him and 3 other subjects to escape before he had a seizure. He became a good friend of NEON (Shiro Sakai) and shared the same goal; to bring down the sadistic maniacs that brought nothing but pain and hatred to their lives, PILLAR.
